Remembering the June 16 1976 Soweto Uprising

This famous file photo of Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying Hector Pietersen, who was shot during the June 16 1976 Soweto Uprising, has come to symbolise young people's bravery against the might of the then apartheid system. Photo: Sam Nzima.

June 16  – Outstanding bravery!

the Teacher pays tribute to thousands of schoolchildren who, 41 years ago, took to the streets to challenge the imposition of Afrikaans — one of the core features of the apartheid — as a medium of instruction in all schools in the country.

We celebrate their selflessness and bravery by daring to engage with the heavily armed, trigger-happy apartheid police officers on the critical issue of transforming the country’s education system.

We salute you!
